There is nothing wrong with making money and protecting your investment. But this is wrong. There’s a place for honoring those whose work has touched the culture we live in, even if they were partially compensated years ago.
An easy and public relations victory solution would be to set up some kind of Kirby Family Benefit fund. Show the world community that the work in the industry has real value that goes beyond cash.
At the very least, you don’t want the next Stan Lee or Kirby starting up their own revolution and cutting your big publishing/ip company out of the loop, do you?
